Where Integrity is as Important Today as it was Hundreds of Years Ago
في سبيل الله الرحمن الرحيم
There's no substitute for wisdom...practices ruled unlawful by Islamic scholars have had a detrimental effect on Western markets. This is why the use of financial engineering has been a double edged sword. Some instruments that were devised to reduce risk have in fact had the opposite effect. This is because they were built on the principle of zero sum; the underlying asset was not owned by the person trading the instrument which encouraged investors to gamble.
The indiscriminate use of such instruments by speculators has had a detrimental effect on world markets. The end result is that certain types of instrument, intended to reduce risk, has in fact increased volatility in Western markets.
The level of leverage of a company is also of concern.
Scholars have preached on the danger of relying on high levels of debt to fund corporate activities but the tax advantages of holding a significant amount of debt and the realtively cheap cost of debt (WACC) in the West has lead to business strategies for growth built on debt as opposed to organic growth. Flurries of mergers and acquisitions only to be followed by disappointment and loss by stakeholders are the result of poor strategic planning and poor due diligence.
